Armies of microscopic single-celled microbial food factories (yeast, bacteria, fungi, algae) are now routinely deployed to produce high-value food ingredients more efficiently than plants or animals. But next-generation ‘cell-free’ biomanufacturing processes could be even more efficient, and unlock opportunities to biosynthesize a far wider set of natural ingredients, claims San Diego based startup Debut Biotechnology.
